Word Study: “Doubtful Mind” (meteōrizō)
Luke 12:29 · Strong’s G3349
Doubtful Mind — The Short Study
Today's Revelations

- 1Anxiety can leave us suspended. The KJV’s “doubtful mind” describes the unsettled suspense that grows around our needs. The Greek word can evoke being raised aloft and wavering. Here Jesus brings that vivid language into a discussion of food and drink. The point is a life pulled between hope and fear; the verse is not a ban on honest questions.
- 2Real needs can take over our attention. Jesus names food and drink because those needs matter. He also invites his disciples to notice the ravens and lilies. This is an invitation to receive life as a gift and to recognize worry’s limits. Planning, working and asking for help remain faithful ways to meet real needs; anxious preoccupation cannot secure tomorrow.
- 3Notice the pull without blaming the grammar. The verb’s form is present middle/passive, so the image of being carried aloft is a useful way to reflect on what unsettles us. The grammar alone does not name an outside agent or prove that pressure makes us passive. “What is pulling my attention away?” is a practical question drawn from the context, alongside “Where am I placing my trust?”
- 4Your Father knows what you need. The next verse supplies the ground for trust: “your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.” Jesus does not dismiss hunger or tell people to manufacture certainty. He turns their attention toward the Father who already knows. Faith brings a real concern into that relationship before circumstances have settled.
- 5Give your seeking a faithful direction. Jesus follows the warning with a positive direction: seek God’s kingdom. The following verses connect that priority with generosity and lasting treasure. Today, name one worry, bring it to the Father, and choose one faithful action. Trust can look like asking for help, doing the next useful task or sharing what you have.
The Bottom Line
When worry leaves you hanging, return to the Father who knows your needs. Seek His kingdom and take one faithful step today.

Song: Making All Things Roomy · The supplied song’s verses describe an unmoored mind, winds of doubt, inner tides and the desire for an anchor, directly echoing today’s focus on anxious suspense. Its chorus carries imagery of invitation, freedom and room to respond. Those chorus images are a devotional extension; “roomy,” “lure” and “coercion” are not definitions of G3349.
