Study — The Short Study

Today's Revelations

Two neighbors stand beside the ancient harbor. Illustrated with hand-painted figurines.
  • 1Give ambition a new aim. The word translated “study” is philotimeomai: to aspire or make something one’s ambition. Paul joins that energetic word to a surprising goal: a quiet life. The instruction does not extinguish purpose or excellence. It directs our desire to achieve toward faithful everyday living, where character matters more than applause.
  • 2Practice a quiet life. Quietness here is a settled way of living, expressed in responsible conduct. It reaches beyond an inward feeling of peace. We can pursue demanding work and meaningful service without feeding unnecessary commotion. A quiet life may be full of activity while remaining free of the need to turn every moment into a public performance.
  • 3Attend to your own calling. “Do your own business” directs attention toward the responsibilities that belong to us. It challenges meddling and needless interference. Yet the surrounding verses commend love for one another, so this is not permission to ignore a neighbor in need. Love respects another person’s responsibilities while taking our own seriously.
  • 4Honor ordinary work. Paul gives working with one’s own hands a place in faithful living. Honest labor can provide for daily needs and keep us from placing avoidable burdens on others. This invitation honors diligence rather than public prestige. It does not measure a person’s worth by income or shame those who cannot work or need the community’s care.
  • 5Let reliability earn respect. Verse 12 explains the outward purpose: to walk honorably toward outsiders and avoid needless dependence. A quiet life is therefore visible through its results. Keep a promise, complete a task carefully, and resist the invitation to gossip. Over time, humble reliability can make love credible to people who do not share our faith.

The Bottom Line

Make quiet faithfulness your ambition. Tend your responsibilities, work with care, and let a reliable life speak.
